One of the number one concerns I’m hearing in this Secretary of State campaign:
“Where are our education dollars going while our kids are home NOT getting the education they were promised?”
As our next Secretary of State, my goal is going to permanently assign an audit team to our public schools. We have a $9 billion dollar education fund and right now, kids are not being well-served by those dollars.
More to the point, even when parents aren’t dialing it in from home with their kids, our education system fails many children of color, kids who are low income and rural, and children with disabilities.
My opponent called Dennis Richardson’s audit on Portland Public Schools a “gotcha” audit because it shined the truth on how PPS fails urban children living in poverty, and Black students in Portland – and to fix that situation means bucking her largest campaign donors.
If she’s elected, we’ll never get a reform-driven audit of our public schools again.
Families deserve to have an education system that meets the needs of their children. I will not shy away from getting to the bottom of why our system is failing kids. And during this prolonged Covid crisis, we deserve an accounting of where our education dollars are going, how these stay home orders are affecting the learning gap, and whether kids are even tuning in to school at all.
